Sculpting Brand Identities

Over the years, I've refined my process of creating impactful and bespoke logotypes that truly capture the essence of each client.

For clarity, a 'logo' is an emblem that represents an organization, it might be purely graphic or made up of the organization's name, also known as a 'logotype' or 'wordmark'. A 'logomark', however, is an individual, graphic element of a logo that can stand alone and symbolize the brand without any accompanying text.

My process usually starts with a Discovery Session, where I work with the stakeholders to find out which keywords that the associate with their brand. We also work through examples of logos that they like and those that they don't like. The goal is to get an understanding of what they envision for the brand. During the session I help facilitate the meeting and guide them in ways of thinking and how approach this process. From this I will have a good understanding what the goal is for my creative process.

Then I start working on the logo, where I iterate and explore several ideas and concepts. I usually boil it down to three variants which will align with the keywords and findings from the discovery session. These logos I then retouch into several photos to show the client, to help them visualize how it can be presented in everything from business cards, office branding to outdoor ad spaces. The goal with the presentation of the logo is to visualize how the logo will work at different scales, in a variety of print scenarios that are relevant to the brands line of business.

TABI PHOTOGRAPHY

The word Tabi is Japanese and means 'Journey'. I created this logo for my Photography and Design company as the beginning of this exciting journey back in 2003.

The foot symbolises the first step, the idea of always keeping moving, learning and experiencing new things in life. The big toe, has such a tremendous importance for balance is slightly different and unifies the letter 'i' with from the word Tabi and the foot.

One of the goals was to have the weight of the logo feel balance even if it was rotated 90 degrees, so as to be flexible in how I could used it.

GOLDFEVER RECORDS

I was commissioned to design the logo and branding for Goldfever Records, an initiative of L.A. based Grammy Award-winning music producers.

I’m pleased with how the design marries a stylized 1940s microphone with a contemporary aesthetic.

Further down below you will find a case study going into more detail about the process of creating this logo.

CAMP ZERO

I was approached to design a logotype for the new and exciting health and training company, Camp Zero.

An 8 week lifestyle program designed to get you started, adapted to and informed about sustainable health and lifestyle choices.

The logo is inspired by military boot camps, but with a more friendly and inviting touch. The pencil sketch feeling was used to show that it is about getting the chance to write a new page in their next life-chapter.

MUTIMA GROUP

I collaborated with Mutima on both their logo and branding, and further extended my involvement through film photography. In this project, I designed the logotype and the logomark.

The logomark resonates deeply with the term 'mutima', translating to 'heart' in several African dialects. Within the symbol, there's a distinct graphical representation of a heartbeat, mirroring the core values and ethos of the founders.

DANCE WITH JASMINA

Faced with the challenge of capturing multiple dance forms in one silhouette, I turned to nature.

The vibrancy of fighting fish and the grace of flamenco dresses guided my design. Paired with Japanese brushwork and a street dance typeface, the logo seamlessly unifies different dance realms.

LUMITORO

The logo I designed for Lumitoro, a jewelry brand I co-founded, marries the graphic and the organic.

‘Lumi’, from the Finnish word for ‘snow’, and ‘Toro’, the Spanish term for ‘bull’, blend my Finnish mother’s heritage with my Spanish father’s. This globally unique name is evenly balanced with four letters from each language.

Originating from a hand sketch, the design, rather than being overly simplified, embraces an organic shape. This ‘perfectly imperfect’ aesthetic captures the essence of the brand.

Graphic Design

This was a logotype for a new website that allowed you to search for different kinds of therapies.

The client had a few ideas that needed to be included, one was to include a book and a specific typeface.

I did a simplistic drawing of the book and the circle behind the text can both be interpreted as a point to start your search and a sun lightning up your path to recovery.

Above you can see some of the early hand drawn sketches and how it evolved into the final solution.

Branding

I was tasked with creating the a visual brand identity for the US based record label Gold Fever Records. What was most urgent was to first create the logotype.

To make sure all stake holder and I where aligned on the vision they had for the record label I started by facilitating a workshop. We did a discovery session to find the keywords that would clarify and best represent what the goal was.

I had in parallel also started working on five artists acts that they had started produced the music for, helping create the visual identity for these. The input was the music genres, together with explanations of what they had in mind and listening to a few of their tracks to see how I could match the visuals to the music and create something that would stand out, be modern, yet within the consumers idea of what those musical genres usually identified with.

Based on this input together with a selection of example brands I then proceeded to create a presentation with three variations. After presenting this I listened to their thoughts and feedback and boiled it down to one logotype.

The goal with the presentation of the logo is to visualize how the logo will work at different scales, in a variety of print scenarios that are relevant to the brands line of business. So I created seven slides for each of the three logotypes, where I retouched the logo to help the client get a feeling and fuller understanding how it would be potentially used.

Branding

This logo presented unique challenges. The client provided a brief, which included images of her dance poses, hand-drawn concept sketches, and early drafts. My main task was crafting a dance logo symbolizing movement that catered to various dance forms – from belly dancing and street dance to salsa, bachata, and zumba. The client’s desire to incorporate a silhouette posed an intriguing dilemma: how could I convey the essence of dance without leaning into a specific style? While ballet and flamenco dancers offer instantly recognizable silhouettes, the challenge was to derive something more universal.

In my exploration, I stumbled upon images of fighting fish; their vibrant, flowing tails mirrored flamenco dress movements in both color and form. This inspiration led to blending ideas of these natural movements with water splash dynamics, especially when rendering the dress and hand movements within the silhouette. The client’s preference for a circular boundary prompted me to employ large Japanese calligraphy brushes, creating a circle that resonated with the logo’s dynamic energy. To round off the design, I selected a typeface with hints of hip-hop and street dance, uniting all elements into a cohesive logotype and logomark.

While I curated a color palette for her brand, I always emphasize designing a primary black and white version of the logo for versatile applications like printing and laser engraving. The colored rendition can be applied where suitableThis logo had some interesting challenges. I had received a brief from the client with example images of her dancing poses, some hand drawn sketches of ideas and a few early draft of ideas.

The thing making this particularly interesting was creating a dance logo which symbolised movement, had impact and would work for several styles of dancing, from belly dancing, street dance to salsa, bachata and zumba. And wanting to include a silhouette this needed to express dance yet not be tied to any style. A ballet dancer or flamenco dancer have striking silhouettes easily perceived, so how could I transform this idea into something more generic? I started exploring different types of movement and colors, I found some images of these fighting fishes with big beautiful tails resembling the movements of flamenco dresses both in their striking colors as well as flowing movements.

Based on this I combined the ideas from these movements and the thought of the movement of water splashes which I used to transform the movement of the dress and hands in the silhouette. The client wished to have some sort of circle around the symbol, here I used Japanese large calligraphy brushes to create a circle where the brush would leave the same type of indication of movement. And finally I chose a typeface tying to hiphop and street dance to bring all the ideas into one logotype and logomark encompassing all the ideas.

I created a color palette for her brand, however I always try to make the logo in a black and white version so that it can be easily used for print, laser engraving etc. And then when appropriate it can be used with color.
